Who can apply?
We accept artists, writers and curators working in all disciplines with projects focused on contemporary art. We are currently not accepting students or assisting international artists with U.S. visa arrangements. Residents of the Twin Cities Metro are not eligible.
Can artist teams apply?
We welcome collaborative projects that include local artists or institutions. We can offer housing for up to two individuals. Artists must be able to share the Cloud House sleeping accommodations which include one private bedroom and a pullout sofa bed in an open living room.
How are applications reviewed?
Cloud House board members review all applications based on quality of work, professional achievements, feasibility of proposals and potential for meaningful exchange with the Minneapolis arts community. Based on these considerations we choose finalists on a rolling basis and follow up for an interview by Zoom. Final decisions, reference checks and notifications will happen soon after the interview.
What amenities and facilities are available to residents?
The Cloud House is a 700 sq. foot one-bedroom cottage with private outdoor space and driveway. There is a large, open room suitable for use as a studio, though larger, onsite or offsite studio space may be considered for artists with special requirements on a case-by-case basis. A small spare room with a desk is useable as additional/separate studio space. The house has a wide range of modern conveniences, including laundry, a fully equipped kitchen with a gas stove and dishwasher and WiFi.
Residents will also have access to Dreamsong’s on site gallery, cinema and library of art, fiction and poetry books. Dreamsong’s compound is located in the Northeast Arts District, home to many studio buildings, and is a short walk to the Ritz Theatre, several great coffee shops and some of the city’s best restaurants. Midway Contemporary Art, a local nonprofit organization with an open library of thousands of titles related to contemporary art, including group exhibition catalogs, monographs, artist books and an extensive selection of periodicals and journals, is also in the neighborhood. The Walker Art Center and Minneapolis Institute of Art are a short drive away. Other local organizations that might be of interest include East Side Freedom Library, Northern Clay Center, Minnesota Center for Book Arts and Highpoint Center for Printmaking, among many others.
What is the programming offered during a residency?
We offer a welcome event to introduce residents to board members and members of the community. The board will endeavor to connect each resident through this event or at an alternative time with relevant artists, collectors, curators, writers and organizers who may be able to enrich the experience of the specific resident. We will also be checking in weekly to offer guidance and suggestions for outings and meetings.
What are the requirements of the resident(s)?
Each artist is asked to present a public program (see the events created by past residents). This can include an open studio, public talk, workshop, performance or a screening.

What is the application process?
Submit your application. Applications are submitted on a rolling basis. If you are accepted into the final round, you will be notified within 45 days and we will schedule a Zoom interview. Within two weeks following the interview, you will be notified if you have been accepted.

Are there any associated fees for the residency?
Upon acceptance, we require a $500 refundable deposit to secure your residency. Emergency or medical exceptions will be considered. Funds may be retained if the resident doesn’t adhere to the contract signed upon acceptance or there is damage to the property. Acknowledgement of this requirement is implied upon submission.
What are options for transportation in the area?
When walking is not an option, past residents have rented a car for their stay, used Hour Car, the Cloud House bicycle, public transportation, Uber or Lyft.
