THE CLOUD HOUSE

joyofbeingalive.jpg

The Cloud House residency is a registered 501c3 organization open to emerging and mid-career visual artists, curators and writers with a special interest in contemporary art. Projects should reflect a committed artistic practice with critical, conceptual depth and engage with current cultural conversations. Preference will be given to projects that engage with the Twin Cities’ history and culture, a specific local site, archive or organization, or creative affinities with a local community. In order to ensure that residents are provided with necessary support, The Cloud House will endeavor to locate and engage the participation of suitable venues, individuals, and organizations.

Applicants are encouraged to submit proposals for projects that can be substantially accomplished with resources available in the Twin Cities, demonstrate a willingness to connect with the local arts scene, and the independence necessary to fulfill their goals on their own. In addition to project proposals, The Cloud House will take into account exhibition history and professional achievements when evaluating applications.

Accommodations are provided for one individual or two collaborators who apply as a team. In addition to receiving a prorated stipend of $300/week, residents may submit proposals that include a budget for travel and materials which the residency will consider and endeavor to cover. Please indicate if this additional budget is a requirement or request. On a case-by-case basis, the residency may seek to partner with outside organizations to secure funding.

Resident housing is a 700 sq. foot one-bedroom cottage situated on Dreamsong’s compound, located in the

Northeast Arts District of Minneapolis. There is a private outdoor space with a driveway and the neighborhood is walkable with great options for food and leisure. Onsite or off-site studio space may be considered for artists with requirements to complete work. Hosting a single resident (or artist team) gives The Cloud House flexibility to work closely with each guest to customize their stay according to their needs.

Because the residency is focused on building lasting community relationships, residents will be encouraged to stay for at least one month with the possibility of a longer sojourn. To accommodate families with children and full-time employed individuals, the residency will also be periodically open to shorter, one-week stays.

4 to 6 Weeks Residency

Prospective residents staying for 4 to 6 weeks will be required to propose a specific project that will culminate in a public presentation, program or publication which could include a performance, exhibition, open studio event, workshop, artist talk or screening.

1 Week Residency

The Cloud House acknowledges that some prospective residents may only be able to commit to staying for one week and we will reserve several spots per calendar year for a shorter stay. Prospective residents should propose feasible goals that would still make good use of the time and engage with the local community. This may include conducting research at a local institution or meetings with potential collaborators in the Twin Cities and presenting an artist talk, leading a workshop or a performance.
